Injury and Initial Diagnosis
- Injury: Jorge Martin suffered a displaced fracture of the right collarbone (clavicle) in the middle third.
- Medical Procedure: After the crash, he was immediately examined at the circuit medical center. Due to the displacement of the fracture, he was transferred by helicopter to the Dokkyo Medical University Hospital for a CT scan to ensure the displaced bone pieces were not rubbing against the lung area.
- Status: He was declared unfit for the remainder of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.
Surgery Details
- Date and Location: Martin is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday (September 29, 2025) at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona, Spain.
- Surgical Team: The operation for the “reduction and fixation of a fracture of the right collarbone” will be performed by Dr. Xavier Mir and his medical team, a well-known specialist in MotoGP injuries.
The Crash
- Incident: The crash occurred on the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix Tissot Sprint race at Turn 1.
- Cause: Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola described the incident as a “serious misjudgement under braking” by Martin, who lost control of his bike on approach to the corner.
- Involvement: Martin’s crashing bike slammed into his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi, taking both riders out of the race. Other riders, including Alex Rins, Johann Zarco, and Jack Miller, were caught up but managed to continue.
Teammate’s Condition
- Marco Bezzecchi underwent medical checks to his right leg and was diagnosed with a severe contusion to the abductor muscle. Critically, he suffered no fractures and his condition was described as having “no serious consequences” other than pain.
Recovery and Future Races (Tentative)
- Martin is certain to miss the next round on the calendar, the Indonesian Grand Prix in Mandalika, which takes place in a few days.
- While a broken collarbone with surgery can sometimes allow for a quick return in MotoGP, his recovery time will be assessed after the surgery. There is speculation that he could potentially aim for a return at Phillip Island (the following race), but this is not confirmed, and his team may choose caution given his injury-plagued season.
Context
- This marks Martin’s fourth substantial injury of the 2025 season, which has been severely hampered by prior hand, foot, ribs, and lung injuries that caused him to miss ten of the opening eleven rounds.
