Womens-Motorcycling-World-Championship-1

On April 29, 2023, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and Dorna Sports announced the start of a new racing series for 2024. This time, the series will be focused solely on women racers, and it has been named the FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship.

The announcement was made by Jorge Viegas, Carmelo Ezpeleta, Gregorio Lavilla, and Francoise Emery during the Jerez MotoGP weekend. It’s exciting to see such a huge step being taken towards gender equality in the world of motorsports. I can’t wait to see what these talented women racers will bring to the table!

FIM

The first season of this new racing series will take place in 2024 and run alongside the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. It’s excellent news at least six rounds will be in the opening season, with two races held per round.

The structure will be similar to the previous, undeniably positive WSBK structure. It’s worth noting it will be a one-make series, with equal bikes distributed up and down the paddock.

Although a supplier for these bikes has yet to be announced, the announcement will follow shortly. I’m eagerly anticipating what this new series has in store!

Jorge Viegas

On the occasion, FIM president Jorge Viegas said, “This is the first time since 1904 that we will start next year with the FIM Women’s World Championship. I also hope you like the logo. It’s a surprise for all of you.

We gave a lot of thought to this and had a lot of demand. As we do in Motocross, Enduro and Trial, we are starting with a women’s World Championship next year in circuit racing.

We plan to have six races in Europe, and we are planning to do a single-brand competition. We will try to have women from all over the world racing in this new Championship. It will be organized primarily within the frame of the WorldSBK Championship.”

Gregorio Lavilla

WSBK executive director Gregorio Lavilla said, “When I was informed about this project and its possibilities, I took a lot of interest and enthusiasm. The World Superbike platform could be one of the places to start this project, but it doesn’t mean it could only be in Superbike. It’s within Dorna, so we will see how this develops.
