How-KTM-is-Developing-its-New-2027-MotoGP-Engine-Despite-Testing-Ban.jpg

The upcoming 2027 MotoGP technical regulations are set to usher in one of the biggest changes to the premier class in decades, shifting the focus with new rules on engine capacity, aerodynamics, and rider aids. While a gentleman’s agreement among manufacturers enforces a strict ban on testing the complete 2027-spec bikes on track until the conclusion of the 2025 season, internal development remains in full swing. This is exemplified by reports confirming that manufacturers, notably KTM, have already reached significant milestones in developing the core component: the new 850cc engine.”

2027 MotoGP Development Status

The development activities and the ban are both in effect as described:

  • Testing Ban: An agreement among the manufacturers prevents on-track testing of the full 2027-spec MotoGP machine (which includes the 850cc engine, new chassis, and restricted aerodynamics) during the 2025 season. The ban is set to be lifted after the conclusion of the 2025 season, specifically with track testing on 2027 GP bikes allowed from November 17, 2025.
  • KTM’s Activity: Despite the on-track ban for the full bike, manufacturers are allowed to develop components. KTM officially confirmed that they have successfully conducted the initial dyno runs of their new 850cc engine designed for the 2027 regulations in September 2025 at their headquarters in Austria. This engine development is an allowed and necessary part of the process, separate from full-bike track testing.

Key 2027 Technical Regulation Changes

The sweeping new regulations are designed to lower speeds, promote rider skill, and increase sustainability:

  • Engine Capacity: Reduction from 1000cc to 850cc.
  • Fuel: Use of 100% sustainable fuel (up from 40% in 2024).
  • Ride-Height Devices: All devices, including holeshot systems for the start, are banned completely.
  • Aerodynamics: Reduced and more tightly controlled to lessen their effect and promote closer racing and overtaking.
  • Minimum Weight: Reduced from 157kg to 153kg.
