Controversy

Mazepin’s attorneys claim the travel ban and asset freeze imposed as part of the sanctions prevent the racing driver from starting talks with Formula One teams about a potential seat for 2024.

Nikita Mazepin will have a hearing in June 2023 to argue for temporarily lifting his sanctions while preparing for an entire legal challenge. The final hearing is scheduled for a month later, in July 2023.

The outcome of these hearings may be known once they take place, and any decision made will depend on the case’s specific circumstances.

2021 Season

Nikita Mazepin joined the Haas F1 team for the 2021 season but had a challenging year, failing to score points and finishing last among the regular drivers in the championship standings. Mazepin’s father, Dmitry, also secured a title sponsorship deal with the team through his company, Uralkali.

However, as tensions rose between Russia and Ukraine in early 2022, Haas announced it was severing ties with Mazepin. Mazepin was replaced by a new driver for the 2022 season, and Haas secured a new title sponsor.

Russian ties

In addition to the controversy surrounding Nikita Mazepin, his family’s ties to Russian leader Vladimir Putin have also been scrutinised. As a result, they have faced sanctions from several countries, including the UK, Canada, and Europe, due to their alleged involvement in human rights abuses and other issues.

Nikita Mazepin’s departure from the team surprised many, given his father’s involvement and the financial support he provided. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Nikita and whether he will find a new team for the upcoming season.
