Mahindra has recently teased the Thar EV concept, set to make its global debut on August 15 in South Africa. Known as the Thar.e, this concept showcases a radical departure from the traditional CJ-like appearance of the current Thar model. This design shift holds immense significance for two key reasons.

Key features of the Mahindra Thar.e concept:

  • Clean-cut, modern design
  • Square headlights, grille, and bumper
  • Square tail lights
  • Electric platform
  • Long range
  • High performance
  • Luxurious interior
  • Comfortable ride

Firstly, the new design serves to future-proof the Thar brand, ensuring its relevance and contemporary appeal in the ever-evolving automotive market. Secondly, and equally important, the revamped design opens doors for Mahindra to export the off-roader to international markets without facing potential concerns from regulators.

Teaser Images

Examining teaser images of the Thar.e, distinct design elements come into focus. The attention is drawn to the square headlight positioned at the upper right of the frame. Adjacent to it, a rectangular black grille proudly bears the ‘THAR.e’ branding in a modern font. Below, a part of a black bumper is visible, indicating careful consideration for pedestrian safety.

LED headlights

These elements converge to form the face of the Thar.e, which represents a complete departure from the current Thar’s upright grille and fender design. Instead, the Thar.e boasts a clean and contemporary look characterized by flat panels and well-defined edges. While it shares a fresh and friendly appearance with vehicles like the Honda E, the Thar.e distinguishes itself with its more angular surfaces.

Square headlight

Further design details enhance the Thar.e’s appeal. The square and sectioned LED headlights offer visual depth, while a chamfered section between the bonnet and fender adds muscularity. A red towing eye or hook provides practicality while adding to the vehicle’s rugged charm.

Notably, the Thar.e’s design is the result of the creative vision of Pratap Bose, a former designer at Tata Motors. This indicates a deliberate effort by Mahindra to infuse innovative design perspectives into their vehicles.

Independence Day

Enthusiasm is building as automotive enthusiasts eagerly await the Thar.e’s full unveiling on Independence Day. The anticipation centres around uncovering more details, such as the wheel arch design, proportions, and volumes, that remain undisclosed.

International markets

The Mahindra Thar.e concept represents a remarkable leap forward for the Thar brand. Its avant-garde design ensures contemporary relevance and a global appeal, while the departure from traditional aesthetics addresses potential regulatory challenges in international markets. All eyes are now set on the Thar. e’s official debut, which promises to showcase a dynamic blend of modernity, ruggedness, and innovation.
