Rivian, according to CFO Claire McDonough, plans to prioritize production of its electric SUV, the R1S, in the second half of 2023. Despite economic uncertainty, the demand for Rivian vehicles remains strong. The R1S is expected to be the most-produced vehicle for Rivian in Q2 2023, accounting for approximately 70% of customer demand.

R1S

Since the R1S shares many similarities with the R1T, production can be ramped up smoothly without significant bottlenecks. Currently, three versions of the R1S are available: Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive, Performance Dual-Motor AWD, and Quad-Motor AWD.

The entry-level Dual-Motor AWD R1S offers a range of 260 to 390 miles, depending on the battery specifications. It generates 600 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds.

The Performance variant of the R1S adds 100 horsepower, reducing the 0-60 time to 3.5 seconds. The top-of-the-line Quad-Motor AWD R1S produces 835 horsepower, achieving a 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3 seconds. It has an EPA range of 321 miles, which is impressive considering its high performance. All versions of the R1S can tow up to 7,700 lbs (3,492 kg).

Upcoming models

McDonough also mentioned Rivian’s upcoming R2 models, which will be fully revealed next year. The anticipated price range for the R2 lineup is between $40,000 and $60,000. While specific details are not confirmed, it is expected that the R2 series will include a crossover and a pickup truck similar in size to the Ford Maverick.

When asked about Ford and GM’s decision to partner with Tesla and adopt the NACS charging standard, McDonough expressed Rivian’s openness to partnerships and its excitement about increasing EV owners’ access to fast charging.

Conclusion

Rivian is in a strong position as it continues to ramp up production of its electric vehicles. The company has a strong demand for its products and is working on a new line of affordable electric vehicles. It is also open to partnerships and is excited to see more EV owners have access to fast charging.
