Toyota is expanding its SUV lineup in the ASEAN market by introducing the Urban Cruiser Icon. Based on the Daihatsu DNGA platform, this new SUV is expected to share its powertrains with the Raize and offer seating for 5 people. Toyota plans to unveil its latest ‘Urban Cruiser Icon’ on May 15, 2023.

Positioning

Interestingly, the Urban Cruiser Icon is expected to be positioned above the Raize in terms of pricing, indicating that Toyota is targeting a higher-end market segment. It will be intriguing to see how the new SUV performs in the highly competitive ASEAN market, especially against established players like the Hyundai Creta.

Specs

The Urban Cruiser Icon is a new SUV model from Toyota, and it is expected to share its powertrains with the Raize. This includes a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that can produce 97 BHP of power and 140 Nm of torque and a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that can produce 87 BHP of power and 113 Nm of torque.

In addition to these engines, reports suggest that the Urban Cruiser Icon could be offered with Toyota’s 1.5-litre petrol engine. However, Toyota still needs to confirm this information.

Engine choice

The engine choice will likely depend on the market where the SUV is being sold and the customer demand for different engine options. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will offer better performance and fuel efficiency than the naturally aspirated petrol engine. On the other hand, the 1.2-litre engine may be a more affordable option for customers who prioritize cost over performance.

Urban Cruiser Icon

Overall, the powertrain options for the Urban Cruiser Icon are expected to offer a good balance of performance, fuel efficiency, and affordability, which should appeal to a wide range of customers in different markets.

Finally, it is unfortunate that the Urban Cruiser Icon will not be offered in India, despite the success of the original Urban Cruiser model. It remains to be seen whether Toyota will introduce this SUV or a similar model in the Indian market in the future.
