By expanding its model lineup, Royal Enfield will be entering new segments of the market. The company is genuinely pushing itself to the forefront of the bike-making business. Along with making new bikes, Royal Enfield is improving its manufacturing and production facilities.
The company, however, never released a true bike with offroad and onroad capabilities. Sure, the Continental GT650 and the Interceptor 650 Street Twin were close to what could be called as such, however they fall in different segment.
The bikes were incredibly well-received, no doubt because they were designed for cruising. When the bikes were first released, former chief executive officer (CEO) and the current managing director (MD) Siddhartha Lal announced the company would be pursuing an aggressive model development strategy.
He said Royal Enfield would be releasing at multiple models in a year alone. An unprecedented move for a company so large and one which could propel Royal Enfield to new heights.
Further, Royal Enfield has also filed a patent in India for the “Scram” nameplate in February, another hint that the Scrambler model is developing.
The Scrambler naming convention has already proved to be immensely popular with any company’s existing range of motorcycles. It will be interesting to see how Scram performs in the global markets.
Expected Specs
We all know the Scram gets the same platform as the existing Himalayan.
Here Gaadiwadi talks about more details, like the front wheel will have a 19-inch setup instead of 21 inches. However, it will have the same powerplant as Himalayan.
The Scram will receive a single cylinder 411 cc engine. Unlike the present Himalayan, we feel it will possibly make 24.31 PS @ 6500 rpm and 32 Nm @ 4000 – 4500 rpm.
Only thing here changes over here is the exterior design and the aesthetics. As far as the prices go, the 650cc cruiser will be around 3-3.5 lakh, ex-showroom in India.
Further, like Meteor 350, it will also get a tripper navigation system.
Even though it’s far from being a direct competitor to bikes like the Ducati Scrambler. The new Royal Enfield Scram is going to be an exciting motorcycle.
The Himalayan was the company’s first serious attempt at building a popular. And accessible off-road machine, and it certainly appears to be successful.
New Scram will be ambitious because this looks like a global spec machine right out of the box.
With the Scram, Royal Enfield is slowly shifting gears towards more street-oriented machines.Which will appeal to considerably larger audiences than the sales-briskly selling Himalayan ever did.
