Yamaha is bringing a surprising amount of technology and performance in 2022. At the same time, the redesigned MT-10 is undoubtedly the star of the show, and Yamaha revised it before EICMA 2021.

Yamaha plans on introducing an entirely new motorcycle. The Tenere 700 Raid Prototype will be Yamaha’s adventure-touring bike to incorporate Adventure Sport DNA.

The Tenere 700 Raid prototype continues to live on. That’s the takeaway from recent patent pictures showing a 700cc sport-touring machine that remains faithful to the concept of a street-legal ADV.

Unlike previous renderings, these patent drawings include all the side panels seen on the 2022 Tenere 700 Raid.

The sealed software, CNC-machined aluminium triple clamps, dedicated ECU comes from Yamaha’s Technology Racing (GYTR) components.

The Tenere 700 Raid patent works as an evolution of the already high-spec Tenere 700 and includes elements that showcase Yamaha’s prowess in creating technology for the most gruelling conditions on earth.

Evolution

Yamaha introduced the Tenere 700 back in 2019. The adventure-oriented middleweight sport-tourer was developed as a more off-road capable alternative to the Tenere 600, an updated version of the XT660Z Tenere.

However, many were not happy due to its unrefined brakes. And Yamaha later made sure the Rally Prototype gets the master cylinder with 300mm front and 267mm rear disc brakes.

Last year, Yamaha introduced Tenere 700 Raid at EICMA 2021, a range-extending feature. However, the latest patents only showed one auxiliary tank mounted on the bike’s rear end.

Now, new literature spells out that there indeed is a second range-extending bottle sitting on the subframe. Because of this setup, We assume the auxiliary gas tank will have a capacity of 4.2 gallons or more.

The patent filing also shared details of the 2022 Yamaha Tenere 700 Raid. The dual-tank configuration allows for additional storage space in the front half of the fuel tank while tapering down to a narrow section at the mid-point.

A side panel design for a dual-tank configuration and integrated crash guards is among the most notable changes. The high-mounted front fender this patent wears may not make it to production, but Yamaha could offer it as an accessory.

Based on these patent drawings, the new Tenere 700 Raid looks like it will be equipped with plenty of off-road features like a long belly pan and side wind deflectors.

It also appears to utilize a more extended seat and zigzag footpegs for aggressive off-road riding. Further, we could see the TFT console replaced by an LCD console over the standard model.

Production vs Prototype

So for the Tenere 700 Raid production model, you’d think Yamaha wouldn’t want to make the upgrade options too appealing.

But the Akrapovic and KYB will arrive as an addon, so the aftermarket development partners suggest the Raid will be more of an up-spec version of the regular Tenere 700 instead of a completely new version different machine.

However, let’s not forget that the Akrapovic exhaust and up-spec KYB suspension were standard for the prototype. However, unlike Tenere 700, Yamaha wants to add the Raid to a budget-friendly segment.
