If two years perfectly demonstrate the complexities of the motorcycle industry. They’re probably 2020 and 2021.A doubling-down phase to capture market share. Followed by a devastating market correction that has left nobody quite sure where things are going.
The impact of these two years felt for at least a decade. And perhaps we’re just genuinely beginning to feel it now. But there are still some bright spots in this story.News that BMW Motorrad achieved its best sales year in company history in 2021 is one of them.
- BMW Motorrad’s R18 classic arrives
- BMW Motorrad’s new electric scooter CE04
- What makes the ‘ M1000RR ‘ super exclusive?
- HJC RPHA 1 the MotoGP helmet
Sales figures 2021
With 194,261 units (+14.8%) delivered to customers, 2021 was BMW Motorrad’s best year ever. As in previous years, sales growth assured by the BMW 1250 GS.Which once again made a vital contribution to the brand’s success in 2021, with around 60,000 units sold.
The all-new BMW R 1250 RT got off to a good start in the marketplace. As did the large R 18 models. With four derivatives presented so far. The new S 1000 R was also very well received.
Together with the first BMW M model for BMW Motorrad. It brought fresh energy to the four-cylinder scene and demonstrated BMW Motorrad’s technology leadership.
GS and R
The R 1250 GS was BMW Motorrad’s most significant selling model of 2021. BMW reportedly sold over 60 thousand of these bikes in 2021 alone. And as you’re about to find out.It wasn’t just the GS dominating sales. Further, BMW says the R 1250 RT, R 18s.And S 1000 R also went well with the motorcycle enthusiasts.
In a year rife with hybrid and electric vehicles. It’s easy to forget that BMW introduced its first such vehicle in 2022, its electric scooter CE-04.
While the C Evolution certainly stands out from its petrol-powered brethren. One must wonder what rider’s want from an EV. Will drivers ever want the same experience from a bike EV as they would a combustion-powered motorcycle?
No, it’s not a drop-dead gorgeous scooter/classic mashup. But something far more critical. It is a radically forward and advanced visual expression of what. We should expect from the motorcycle industry’s most essential OEM.Something that makes us believe in and wishes for more design ambition by all future new model introductions.
