Alan Clews was an ambitious and successful club rider; however, he knew that if he could secure a ride on a BSA works scrambler. It would bring even more significant racing victories.
BSA had pioneered the use of Titanium in the chassis as used by world motocross champion Jeff Smith, a precious material Alan had always dreamed of using once he had forged his career as a master bike builder.
Alan achieved many things at the helm of Clews Competition Machines. Including the world’s first aluminium trials bike, direct link suspension. The first carbon fibre road racer and the first aluminium bonded chassis in the GP450.
Titanium, however, had eluded him. CCM sadly lost Alan in 2018. Just before his 80th birthday and, to commemorate CCM’s founding father in the Bolton firm’s golden anniversary year. The team created another first: a production motorcycle with complete Titanium chassis.
Heritage 71
The Heritage ’71. Honouring Alan’s memory and celebrating such a landmark year required an extraordinary machine.
The team mulled the design repeatedly until everyone finally agreed that this was a bike worthy of the heritage moniker.
From the outset, the Spitfire frame has always been a standout design feature of the series. Using 3Al/2.5v CWSR aerospace-grade titanium takes the original design to another level.
Further contributing to the weight loss of this unique machine. A specially commissioned pair of Dymag race alloys reduce the unsprung weight by 6kg. Complementing the aesthetics of the bike’s skeleton, further reinforcing the Spitfire’s legendary handling.
A bespoke QD racing exhaust system, handcrafted from 64-individually welded Titanium sections. Adds visual and aural drama.
A unique carbon body kit, hand-painted with a stunning colour scheme to subtly match the organic tones of frame and pipes.
And it’s not just the headline elements of the bike’s design that the team focussed their attention on. A semi-aniline hide saddle. Perforated and embossed with CCM’s 50-year brand, is affixed to a single machined block of aluminium. Bearing the signature of the great man himself.
A unique “Clews Competition machines” radiator guard. And a laser engraved chrome Monza Fuel cap denotes each bike series number from 71 machines.
Only the best components have made the build specification for this bike. Including Ohlins, Blackline suspension, Brembo 4-pot callipers and Rizoma sports grips. And a striking new active cornering headlight gives the front elevation real presence.
Performance specifications are Engine 600cc Single Cylinder with 62bhp and torque 66Nm@5500rpm, torque and Weight 136kg, Seat height 830mm.
