With 80,000 units sold, R 18 has become the talk of the town. In our interview with Dr Ralf Rodepeter, Head of Brand and Product BMW Motorrad, he said, “Yes, we are selling about 80,000 units of Boxer engine bikes per year. That is why we believe in the strength and future of this engine concept.
But before we took this massive step with the unique R 18, did many laps until we were sure to meet our customers’ wishes both technically and in terms of design “.
The figures show within a brief period how strong the BMW R18 has penetrated the motorcycle market.
The new R 12 will loan the boxer engine from the present R nineT model.
The boxer engine has undergone technical and visual fine-tuning for use in the new R nine T models.
R nine T engine spec
The new motor now aligns with the EU-5 pollutant norms. Its peak power output is now 80 kW (109 hp) at 7250 rpm (previously 81 kW (110 hp) at 7750 rpm).
R18 engine spec
Now the catch is even though the R18 has a 1800cc engine, the output it gets is 67 kW (91 hp) at 4 750 rpm, maximum torque 158 Nm at 3 000 rpm.
The R nine T comes with 1,170 cc. It gets 19 hp more than the R18.So BMW will have to tune the R 12 engine.
Coming back to the R nine T engine. While the maximum torque is still 116 Nm at 6000 rpm, newly designed cylinder heads provide a more harmonious transition from the outer to the inner cooling fins.
And newly designed throttle valve parts and cylinder head covers now give the bike even greater aesthetic appeal.
Inside the cylinder heads, a new turbulence system swirls the mixture to ensure better and cleaner combustion and increased torque.
Thanks to an even more concentrated power and torque curve – especially in the range between 4000 and 6000 rpm.
Pulling power levels are now tangibly better than those of the predecessor. The new R12 or A2 model will arrive in October 2021 and will be available in A2 countries.
