The Stelvio is making a comeback soon! Moto Guzzi announced at the EICMA 2022 the V 100 Stelvio travel enduro would follow the V 100 Mandello in 2023. And get this, in April of that year; she was spotted in Italy. I’m excited to see what Moto Guzzi has in store for us with the new Stelvio.

Wow, so much news is coming out of EICMA 2022 that it’s hard to keep up. But one thing that caught my attention was the announcement of Moto Guzzi’s new Stelvio, essentially a new “Guzzi GS” for all the adventure-seeking riders.

It will be a big deal in 2023, and Guzzi fans are already excited about it. There are already photos of the new Stelvio in Italy in April. It will be an exciting time for Moto Guzzi fans!

There were rumoured sightings of two pre-series Moto Guzzi V 100 Stelvios on a test drive. These bikes were spotted in Noale, just north of Venice, near the Aprilia headquarters, where the new Moto Guzzi models are being developed.

Someone managed to snap photos of the bikes from a car and posted them on various Moto Guzzi forums and social media channels. Some speculate this may be a guerrilla marketing tactic, intentionally releasing spy photos to generate buzz and excitement among Moto Guzzi enthusiasts. What do you think?

These Moto Guzzi spy shots caught my attention with their impressive features. Notably, the LED headlights, the V 100 Mandello, are paired with a higher windshield that can be adjusted. 

Moreover, a distance radar sensor is included, marking a first for Moto Guzzi. Other noticeable features are the wide handlebars with hand protectors, an aluminium motor protector, and a luggage rack at the rear, complete with suitcase holders. 

The Enduro version will have extended suspension travel and a higher seat height.

Guzzi GS

Have you seen the new Moto Guzzi V 100 Mandello? It’s a stunning bike! What’s particularly noteworthy about this model is that it features a water-cooled V-Twin for the first time. 

While it appears slightly taller than a travel enduro, with its 17-inch street wheels, it’s not a pure enduro like the “Guzzi GS”. The announcement of a new Stelvio model is exciting, but let’s be honest, it was hardly surprising. It’s merely the next logical step for Moto Guzzi.

Did you catch the display at the Moto Guzzi booth during EICMA 2022? They showcased the new Stelvio’s impressive tubeless cross-spoke wheels with aluminium rims and wire spokes, all set against a stunning mountain backdrop. 

BMW R 1250 GS

The front wheel boasts 120/70 R 19 tires, while the rear wheel features 170/60 R 17 tires. Interestingly, Stelvio’s specs are similar to those of the current BMW R 1250 GS, but it also offers the option of cast aluminium wheels of the same size.

It’s safe to say that the V 100 Stelvio won’t be able to match the performance specs of the R 1250 GS, let alone the upcoming R 1300 GS. The new Stelvio will likely inherit the same engine from the V 100 Mandello model, which boasts a 1,042 cc engine with a maximum output of 115 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque.

Competitors

Based on these numbers, the Stelvio will compete with other adventure touring motorcycles such as the Honda Africa Twin 1100, Suzuki V-Strom 1050, and Ducati Multistrada V2.

The off-road capability of the new Stelvio remains to be determined. However, judging from its wheels, it falls between pseudo and hard. It must be at most the V 100 Mandello in weight, so we need to ensure that it weighs around 230 kilograms with a full tank, which is reasonable for its size. 

Thankfully, Moto Guzzi never compromises on equipment, so we can expect the Stelvio to come fully equipped with electronics, just like the Mandello. There are rumours about adding distance radar to the Stelvio, which would be an excellent safety feature. Let us keep our fingers crossed.

Drive Concept

It is a fact the drive concept of Moto Guzzi bears a striking resemblance to that of BMW. Interestingly, BMW had already initiated the production of this type of drive in Munich as early as 1923, while Moto Guzzi only embraced it in the 1960s in Mandello del Lario. 

One of the most significant disparities between the two lies in the angle of the cylinders. The BMW boxer has a 180-degree angle, whereas the Moto Guzzi V-Twin has a 90-degree angle, and the cylinders of the BMW are in the airstream, while those of the Moto Guzzi are angled upwards. 

Nonetheless, both models share a crankshaft in the direction of travel and a connected cardan final drive, which is a critical determinant for numerous buyers of travel enduros.

Chronology

The Moto Guzzi travel enduro is often called the “Guzzi GS, ” reminiscent of the original GS from BMW that debuted in 1980. The first “Guzzi GS” was introduced in 1992, known as the Quota 1000, which was later upgraded to the Quota 1100, both packing 69 hp. 

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 8V followed suit and was produced from 2008 to 2016. It was air-cooled, with an output of 105 hp, and was named after the famous Stelvio Pass in South Tyrol, Italy. However, since 2017, when the Euro 4 emission standard was introduced, Moto Guzzi has yet to have a Stelvio in its lineup. 

This is the enormous gap in the brand’s more than 100-year-old history that even the V 85 TT, while popular, cannot fill due to its comparably weaker power output.

No Speculation

It’s not just speculation anymore. The company officially announced the new model at the EICMA 2022, which is said to be in the typical travel enduro format. 

The bikes have already been showcased in Milan, and people are excited about it. Even more interesting is that a Moto Guzzi V 100 Stelvio was spotted by a spy at the end of April 2023. It looks like we can expect some exciting things from Moto Guzzi soon!
