In the previous half-decade, motorcycle manufacturers worldwide have been busy building out their small-displacement (under 400cc) offerings.

In the U.S., this brought the state of the economy to a virtual standstill. As buyers in droves headed for the cheapest new machines money could buy.

While it’s true that the economy and unemployment are no longer as dire.Small-displacement motorcycles are still quite popular in an area of the world where society is much different from that of North America.

And if you are a motorcyclist, you will know all too well about the importance of engines. And how big and powerful is not always better.

More often than not, the most important thing about an engine is its reliability.Which then leads to better overall performance.

And that’s what Piaggio and Zongshen are teaming up on to develop for the future – a single-cylinder 150cc engine that could very well become one of the standout motors in the industry.

The relationship

To further strengthen the relationship between Italy-based Piaggio and China-based Zongshen. Piaggio and Zongshen have developed a new small-displacement engine.

As per Piaggio, this new engine will power a new range of small-displacement scooters that both Piaggio and Zongshen will sell.

They have designated it the G150S, and it is based on the latest evolution of Piaggio’s proven two-stroke mill. The liquid-cooled motor utilizes electronic fuel injection. And can be found on a few scooters right now like Yamaha NMAX, Honda ADV150

It’s uncertain when this engine will hit Piaggio’s offerings in various parts of the world. But we should at least find out what form it comes in—scooter or moped—shortly.

Large manufacturers typically use the same engine across multiple platforms. That’s why, when you learn about a new engine in one model. You can probably expect to see it in several others within that model year and going forward.

With the partnership between Piaggio and Zongshen now confirmed, we should expect to see this workhorse of a motor in several models.
