On December 22, 2022, KTM North America issued a recall for the GASGAS MC 250, a closed-course competition motorbike. The recall was due to the engine stalling unexpectedly and cited that a defect in the ignition timing system may cause the motorcycle to stall while riding.

This danger of engine stall and high speeds may increase the crash risk. The same notice was issued in Canada by Transport Canada and was updated on October 13, 2022.

The problem is an incorrectly programmed capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) box, which could suddenly cause the engine to fail and make the bike unable to restart. If the engine suddenly stalls, it could increase a rider’s crash risk and injury.

Corrective Actions:

GASGAS will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your motorcycle to a dealership to replace the CDI box. GASGAS recommends only using your bike once the recall repairs have been completed to reduce the safety risk.

KTM North America recommends that all consumers who own the GASGAS MC 250 Competition Motorcycles stop riding them immediately.

The repair service will be performed free of charge for all customers involved. However, a timetable has yet to be set for when those repairs will occur. As of December 22, 2022, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

KTM will notify affected owners by email and should contact a dealer for service. Also, the owners are strongly cautioned only to use their motorcycles once they have undergone the repairs that will end the hazard of them stalling while in operation.

Owners may contact GASGAS Motorcycles North America at 888-985-6090 during business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, or by contacting KTM at 1-450-441-4451 in Canada.Monday through Friday.
