The concept of Monopod by Uli Staiger is different and breathtaking

Background

Thrice Uli tried to capture the photograph Bahnhof of Prinzenstrasse in Downtown Berlin. He says ‘All three series were okay, but not breathtaking’.

His objective was to capture a great background with a close, detailed foreground with a good view of the old station and dynamic horizon.

Finally, he came up with the idea to capture the shot in the pouring rain to add reflecting details that lead to a completely different experience when watching the scene.

Most important: he managed not to get run over by some idiot driver.

To get some depth, he had to change the background. Large buildings always work for a city scene, so he put the skyline of Dubai onto the horizon.

Also important: The dark tonality of the foreground feels like dawn when combined with the street lanterns and the lights in the background scene. It’s simple: Dark front + bright background = good impression of depth.

Monopod

All this Photoshop work would be nothing without a very strong eyecatcher that dominates the scene. He found the “Monopod” in Doug Chiang’s book “Mechanika”, a futuristic designed one axis racer.

He can strongly recommend this book to all of you out there looking for out of the box design for cars, space ships and all sorts of vessels you would not expect to see on any street.

So he asked Doug if he can use his design and he agreed. He had to change some details to make it look more massive and more like a truck.

The Monopod is modelled and rendered in Maxon’s Cinema 4D. Uli had set the lights according to the photographed scene and put the rendering right into the Photoshop file.

Then all the little details were added, like the water splashes, the raindrops and the lights of the Monopod.

The used look of the Monopod is a combination of two shades that are mixed within Cinema 4D by using a vertex map.

It has allowed Uli to paint directly onto the geometry of the pod without messing around with UVs.

The rider is a 3D character from Adobe FUSE (still runs on Mojave on my Macbook).

Building a scene like this is hard, especially at the beginning of the project.

LivingWithGravity’s Take

The idea to develop massive Monopod with the handle being pulled up is something new with three small yet powerful lights.

The background is also exclusive.
