Sure, you might think that you’ll be fine after a few hundred miles in the saddle. But how far can you go when you’re shifting uncomfortably in your seat or getting chafed by the handlebar grips?
That’s why an innovation like BMW Motorrad’s January 2022 patent application for an adjustable-width motorcycle seat is so intriguing.
A patent diagram of how they could arrange this. And also help show how it might work in theory and look in practice.
As you can see in the illustrations. The rear of the saddle is essentially composed of two parts. The main seat area and a spoiler section that appears to tilt up towards. Where riders can situate their backsides.

BMW Motorrad is planning on implementing a solution for adjusting the width of its rider seats. That takes advantage of a concept based on a pivoting-seat design combined with locking features.
Traditionally, adjustable motorcycle saddles consist of sliding sections adjusted by either pulling or pushing the saddle toward either side of the motorcycle.
BMW’s has kept both manual and automated options open for wide-reaching. Allowing riders to choose between both narrower and broader seat configurations throughout the day as needed. And whatever option you choose, you will be able to lock.
Electronically adjustment
We’re all familiar with the adjustable seat height on our motorcycles. Some models of BMW Motorcycles can also electronically adjust the width of the saddle based on preference or body type.
The new patent application covers remote electronic adjustability of your saddle’s width via the hand controls that modern BMW riders are already familiar.
For anyone who has a bit of experience on a motorcycle. It should be clear by now that BMW Motorrad is working on some clever adjustable seat solutions.
It’s unclear whether the design shown above will come to production. What we could call similar solutions with fewer parts, or if BMW’s engineers are even thinking about using something like this for an upcoming model.
But if all goes well and if BMW can duplicate the mass-produced.We will likely soon see it in action on a two-wheeled machine that we’ll call elegant in its simplicity.
