Yamaha to develop electric scooter in collaboration with Gogoro.
This collaboration is related to development and manufacturing outsourcing of electric motorcycles and sharing of battery replacement system, and they plan to make a formal contract by the end of the year.
The company has obtained the cooperation of Sumitomo Corporation, a business partner of both companies, regarding this matter.
Yamaha entered the Taiwan motorcycle market from 1966, and currently sells 290,000 motorcycles (conducted in 2017), mainly models manufactured by Yamaha Motor Taiwan. They also manufacture and sell the electric motorcycle E-VINO (Ebino), and also export to Japan.
As a development function, they have Yamaha Motor R & D Taiwan, which is responsible for scooter development mainly for Taiwan. Through the collaboration with Gogoro, the company is expanding its lineup including engine cars in the Taiwan market, and in the case of electric cars, it aims to improve user convenience by utilizing Gogoro’s battery station.
Gogoro has entered the Taiwan motorcycle market from 2015 and is developing a new electric motorcycle business with its own electric scooter and a battery station that allows easy battery replacement.
Battery stations have been installed by Gogoro Energy Network in more than 750 locations in Taiwan to date, with more than 1,000 in 2019. The battery has been replaced more than 17 million times since the start of installation. Gogoro expects to increase production of electric motorcycles through this collaboration.
